"Yes We Can"

Many people believe that THIS election will go down as one of the most controversial.  Yes.  That is obviously true.  But, THIS election is much more than controversial--its going to go down in history as our nation will see its first African American president.  Now, I now I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but honestly, who else is better to run this country?  Hillary Clinton?  I'm not even going to answer that.  I won't even waste my time talking about her.  I believe that Barack Obama has what it takes to change this country.  He can and will make a difference.

With this year being as important as it is, I became incredibly excited to be voting, but, only to find out that I miss the mark by a little under a month.  My birthday is in December, and I now feel like the wind was kicked out of me.  THIS election is going to be massive, and my voice won't get heard.  But, that's when I got the brilliant idea to go and stop by the Obama Headquarters by our courthouse.  I went in and asked if they had any pins, bumper stickers, etc.

   

They told me that they are out of everything except pins, so i stocked up on those and was like, well, I'll come back for shirts and bumper stickers.  As I walked out the door I stopped and said: "Ya know, I'm not going to be able to vote in this election, but this is one I feel very strongly about, and I want my voice to be heard.  Any suggestions?"  I was kind of laughing because I was frustrated and the man asked me to help them campaign.  So, I signed up and told them what I'd be willing to do and they'll call me whenever they need help.  

I am more than excited to be able to help out.  Now I am not so blue about the lack of me voting.  My opinion is going to make an impact on someone who can vote, and that's all that matters.  I just don't want to let this election pass and not have done anything to help out.  Years from now, this could be remembered as one of the biggest elections, and I want my voice to be heard--and now it will be.  Also, I found this video that Will.i.am made that is basically Barack Obama's (my favorite of his) speech: "Yes we can."  Enjoy.

The Lion King: The Broadway Musical

On Thursday, my mom, my step-dad and I took a four hour drive to catch "The Lion King: Broadway Musical" before it left Toledo, Ohio.  We found $125 tickets for only $65!! Meaning that we were lucky enough to be in the 2nd row on the floor.  Meaning that every fantastic costume and every breathtaking set, was able to be seen in full detail and I will never have an experience quite like this ever again on a stage.  This show was a knockout and, growing up with the movie, the music, the story, and the whole deal, made "The Lion King" that much more enjoyable.  This show was not only a pleasure for the eyes, ears, and senses, but also for the heart.  It made me think back to when I used to watch the movie, memorize the songs, and brought the magic of Disney and the magic of Broadway--working together to produce a show that I will never ever forget.  I now can see why this show has been going strong after 10 years on Broadway, and, if audiences are like the audience we had, then they must receive a standing ovation for every performance.  So, in conclusion, if you are ever in New York, or anywhere close (Its on a national Tour) you need to take some time and go see it.  You won't be sorry, I promise you.  This is an experience I'll never ever forget.  GO SEE "THE LION KING" NOW!

The 2008 Phantoscope Film Festival

On Saturday, my friends and I took a two and a half road trip to the Richmond Art Museum in Richmond, Indiana.  My film: "145 Tomahawk Lane" was going to be shown at the festival, and we had a chance to win the $500 cash prize for first place.  When we got there, the woman running the show came up to me and said, "I am so glad you could make it Alex. But, don't leave after the festival, because there is something I want to talk to you about." So, the festival began, with all the films playing in random order, until the end, when they showed the top five films, with the last film being the winner.  I made it into the top five, with an applause I'll never forget.  Drew Varvel from Bethesda Christian School, Brownsburg took home the first place prize. But, that would soon be the least of my thoughts.  

The woman who talked to me in the beginning came to find me at the end of the festival.  She congradulated me on getting to top five (All top five films will be screened at the Indianapolis International Film Festival this April) and told me something I'll never forget.

"Alex, you film was my favorite of the bunch, and not only my favorite, but a favorite of many of the panel.  You have created quite a complex, yet simple looking film and we loved it.  And, the only reason you didn't win was for the same reason people go and see Michael Bay movies.  This is what you need to be doing for your career Alex.  You need to make movies, and you need to go to a place that offers a major in FILM, not just telecommunications, but actual FILM, and Columbia College in Chicago has a lot to offer."  She then gave me information on the college and recently e-mailed me with other information from other colleges that offer a film major.  

This woman (Whom I won't name) will be someone I keep in contact to for years to come.  And, if I get into a film school, she will be the one to thank.  For, without her help, none of this would have ever happened.  She saw the spark inside me, and I am so lucky and thankful to have had the chance to attend an experience like this one. 

After our little conversation, we made it to the lobby, only to find numerous people whom I've never seen in my life, go up to me and tell me how much they enjoyed my film.  I was in awe. Not only had people actually seen my film played at a theater, they liked it! Could this have been any greater of a feeling?  No. I was speechless.

This will be one of the moments in my life that I'll always remember.  No matter what happens with my career, I will always remember these people because they were my first audience.  I also won't ever forget the wonderful friends who came along with me.  All of us, sitting in a theater, holding hands, hoping to god that my film was played amongst the final five.  So, thank you for everyone who has ever given me an honest opinion on my films.  You guys are fantastic and I am eternally grateful for such great supporters.  So, thanks again friends, and family.  You guys are amazing.  I love you all.
